Every bridge programme in a monsoon-affected catchment contains one hard constraint: the number of weeks the river bed can be worked safely. That number is not negotiable, and no amount of resource loading extends it.
The consequence is that foundation sequencing, not superstructure production, usually determines the completion date. A programme that treats the two as equal priorities tends to lose a full season.
Start from the hydrology, not the drawing
Before sequencing anything we assemble the available flow record for the site and identify the reliable low-flow band — not the average, but the period we can commit resources to with acceptable confidence.
That band becomes a fixed window in the programme. Every in-river activity is then fitted inside it, and anything that can be moved out of it is moved out.
Decouple what can be decoupled
Girder casting is the clearest example. Casting on a bank-side bed, rather than in position, removes superstructure production from the river calendar entirely. The cost of the casting bed is normally recovered in a single avoided season.
- Cast off-site or bank-side wherever access and lifting allow
- Prefabricate reinforcement cages before the window opens
- Position standby plant before the season, not when it is needed
- Complete approach earthworks during the period river work is impossible
Design temporary works for the flood case
Cofferdams and staging fail in the event they were not designed for. We design temporary works for a defined flood return period, check them independently, and write the overtopping response into the site emergency plan.
The alternative — designing for the working condition and hoping the season behaves — puts people in the water.
