Trishuli Corridor River Bridge

A 180-metre, four-span river crossing replacing a seasonal causeway that closed the corridor for up to eleven weeks each monsoon. Substructure was built inside a single low-flow window using staged cofferdams.

Scope of work

  • Well foundations to 22 m depth in mixed river-bed material
  • Four RCC piers and two abutments with wing walls
  • Four-span prestressed girder superstructure, 180 m total length

  • 1.4 km of approach road, drainage and river-training works
The challenge

What made this difficult.

  • 01

    The river-bed working window was limited to a 5-month low-flow period; missing it would have added a full year to the programme.

  • 02

    Sub-soil investigation showed a boulder layer at variable depth, making sinking rates unpredictable across the four foundations.

  • 03

    The existing causeway had to remain open to local traffic throughout construction.

The engineering solution

What we did about it.

  • 01

    Foundation sequence was re-planned to sink two wells concurrently with independent cofferdams, doubling the effective use of the low-flow window.

  • 02

    A chiselling and grabbing method with pre-positioned standby plant kept sinking progress through the boulder layer without stopping the sequence.

  • 03

    Girder casting moved to an off-site bed on the true left bank, decoupling superstructure production from river conditions.

  • 04

    The causeway was retained as a controlled single-lane crossing with scheduled closure windows published to the community two weeks in advance.
