Scope of work

  • 21 km of carriageway widening from 7 m to 11 m
  • Full-depth pavement reconstruction on 9 km of failed sections
  • 34 cross-drainage structures replaced or extended
  • Two urban sections with kerbs, footpaths and covered drains
  • Road furniture, marking and safety barrier installation
The challenge

What made this difficult.

  • 01

    The corridor carries continuous freight; full closure was not permitted at any point.

  • 02

    Two market towns along the alignment have shopfronts directly abutting the carriageway.

  • 03

    The original drainage was undersized, causing recurring pavement failure at 34 locations.

The engineering solution

What we did about it.

  • 01

    Construction is staged in 800 m sections with half-width working and signed diversions, maintaining one lane in each direction at all times.

  • 02

    Urban sections are built in short lengths with steel plate bridging to preserve shopfront access during working hours.

  • 03

    Cross-drainage capacity was recalculated against updated rainfall data, and structures upsized before pavement reconstruction.

  • 04

    Night working was introduced for asphalt laying in the urban sections, agreed with the municipality and notified to residents.

  • Dust suppression on all haul routes through settled areas
  • Drainage upgraded to reduce recurring failure and future reconstruction demand
  • Roadside tree replanting programme agreed with the local authority
