Scope of work

  • 6.5 km of street reconstruction with concrete and bituminous surfacing
  • Covered storm drainage with connection to the city outfall
  • Footpaths, kerbs, crossings and street furniture
  • Utility duct provision and coordinated service diversion
  • Junction improvement and road marking
The challenge

What made this difficult.

  • 01

Water, power and telecom utilities all required work in the same alignment.

  • 02

Recurring monsoon flooding at four junctions had defeated previous drainage attempts.

  • 03

Streets pass through dense commercial frontage with daily trading.

The engineering solution

What we did about it.

  • 01

A single coordinated programme was agreed with all three utility owners so each street was excavated once, with ducts laid for future service expansion.

  • 02

Drainage was resized from updated catchment analysis; the four flood points needed capacity upstream, not larger outfalls.

  • 03

Work proceeded in 150 m lengths with same-day temporary reinstatement, keeping commercial access open every evening.

  • 04

Final surfacing followed only after all buried work was tested and signed off.

Key outcomes

  • Streets rebuilt

    6.5 km

  • Flood points

    4

    Resolved through upstream capacity

  • Excavations

    Single pass

    All utilities coordinated

  • Access

    Maintained daily

Safety performance

  • Pedestrian routes and shopfront access maintained continuously
  • Open excavations barricaded and lit overnight without exception
  • Confined-space controls on all drainage chamber work
  • Public liaison point staffed during working hours

Sustainability measures

  • Reclaimed pavement material reused in sub-base layers
  • Drainage designed to reduce recurrent flood damage and repair cycles
  • Street tree pits and planting integrated into the footpath design
  • Dust and noise controls agreed with the commercial associations
